Check-In Procedures

For a smooth experience, it is recommended to arrive at the railway station at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure.

At Cairns Central Station, the check-in area is located inside the station. Pre-booked passengers should present their booking confirmation, either as an email, booking reference, or voucher. Staff will verify your booking and direct you to the correct carriage. Boarding typically begins 10-15 minutes before departure.

At Freshwater Station, passengers can enjoy a hearty breakfast in antique railway carriages before boarding. This station also features a railway museum and a pioneer cottage, adding to the charm of your journey. Freshwater is often the preferred departure point due to its character and ample free parking.

Parking and Luggage Storage

Free parking is available at Cairns Central and Freshwater Stations. If you park at Cairns Central, remember to bring your parking ticket with you for validation by Queensland Rail. For luggage, small hand-held items can be carried on board, but larger items should be stored in designated areas. Please note that space for large prams and strollers is limited, so it’s advisable to inform the staff at the time of booking if you plan to bring one.

Accessibility and Assistance

The Kuranda Scenic Railway is committed to providing accessible services for all passengers. Each train includes a carriage with accessible facilities, although there are some limitations due to the heritage nature of the service. Hydraulic lifts are available at Freshwater and Kuranda Stations to assist with boarding. If you require assistance, it’s best to inform the staff in advance to ensure a comfortable journey.

For those with mobility devices, please note that access to the Barron Falls stop is via stairs only, and there is no wheelchair access to the viewing platform. Therefore, it is recommended that passengers with mobility challenges remain onboard during this stop.

Additional Tips

While on the train, enjoy the stunning views of the rainforest and Barron Gorge. The journey includes a brief stop at Barron Falls Lookout for photos, although wheelchair users must remain onboard due to the lack of a ramp at this stop. Remember to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a hat and sunglasses to enjoy the views without discomfort. The railway operates on a cashless basis, so ensure you have a credit or debit card for any purchases.

For those traveling with small children, small collapsible prams and strollers can be stored under the seats in Heritage Class, provided they collapse to no more than 25 cm in height. If you have a larger pram or stroller, please inform the staff at the time of booking to ensure space is available.
