School Holiday Art Workshops on Rottnest Island
Every year during the school holidays, Rottnest Island hosts a special event that brings together art and culture in a family-friendly setting. The School Holiday Art Workshops, led by Aboriginal artists Sharyn and James Egan, offer a unique opportunity to connect with Noongar culture through weaving, painting, and storytelling.
The workshops are held over two days and are free to attend, though registration is essential due to limited spaces. Participants of all ages can join a weaving workshop where they will learn to create small animal totems using raffia and colored wool. This hands-on experience is complemented by cultural stories and insights shared by Sharyn Egan.
On the second day, attendees can participate in interactive painting workshops, where no prior experience is needed. These sessions allow participants to experiment with color and create their own artwork to take home.
The event takes place in the Sculpture Garden outside the Wadjemup Museum, which is easily accessible from the main jetty in Thomson Bay. The workshops are inspired by the 'Connections to Wadjemup' exhibition, showcasing over 50 Aboriginal artworks from Western Australia.
Getting to Rottnest Island is simple, with options to travel by ferry, plane, or private boat. Once on the island, there are various ways to get around, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable visit.
For those interested in attending, it's advisable to book early as spots fill up quickly. This event is a wonderful way to engage with the local culture and enjoy a creative experience with the whole family.
